Things That Make Me Smile

Saw a kid maybe twelve, thirteen years old, walking to school this morning with a full size Kevin Staab pirate skateboard (circa, I dunno, 1989?!) under his arm. Don't know what kinda wheels it had, but they were big, and neon green.

Seems like only yesterday...

If the deck looked really new, it may have actually been purchased new. I was in a skate shop a few months ago, and they were selling a number of retro boards with the original shape and graphics. I guess they're good for getting across town with the big gummy wheels, and huge platform deck.

I didn't get that close a look at it, but the thought that it might be a reissue did occur to me. I preferred to believe that it was his dad's old board, which given the kid's age and the heyday of Sims skateboards is entirely possible. (Scary)

What struck me most was the profile this lanky kid struck while schlumping off to school, board under his arm... it was a timeless, circle-of-life kind of moment.
