Nod
It was nice to see my favourite film of 2006, The Lives of Others, (Das Leben der Anderen) get a Golden Globe nod for Best Foreign Language Film last night, even if it did lose out to Clint Eastwood's heralded Letters From Iwo Jima. The Lives of Others is also Germany's official submission (each foreign country only gets one) to the Oscar's this year, but those nominations haven't been released yet.
The Lives of Others will have a limited North American theatrical release starting February 9th in Los Angeles and New York. The website is much improved since I last posted on this film, and it even has a decent trailer. Check it out, and if it comes to a theatre near you, go see it. Or don't, but it is one of the few films that I can heartily recommend.
*Update: The Academy Award nominations are published; The Lives of Others makes the list.

Maybe I'm a simpleton when it comes to the ins and outs of the movie business, but Clint Eastwood and Best Foreign Film does not compute. I'm not questioning the quality, but the category. Therefore, you can claim Das Leben should win by default, like when Ben Johnson tested positive for steroids or Vanessa Williams lost track of her private photo collection.
Have a happy new year, and say hi to Esther from us.

I was considering analyzing that very thing in the post, but I don't really know exactly how these lines are drawn, or when Best Foreign Film became Best Foreign Language Film. But it means that if Canada wants to submit a film it has to be in a language other than English, while Mel Gibson's bloody "Apocalypto" is a contender. The dialogue in "Letters From Iwo Jima" is entirely Japanese, and thus it's a foreign language film.
So there you have it. With all the attention Clint's been getting, I guess they had to give him something. But it does seem a little nepotistic, eh?
